Iedereen heeft vandaag de discussie kunnen volgen over de aankondiging van Apple dat het met de nieuwe iBook Creator de wereld van de schoolboeken wel eens zou aanpakken. Een beetje gechargeerd van mijn kant – we weten nu wel dat we een beetje door Apple’s ronkende retoriek heen moeten kijken als ze een aankondiging doen. Maar heeft Apple gelijk en is aan het tijdperk van het papieren leerbeok een einde gekomen? Ik denk het niet. Want zoals John Pettigrew op Futurebook terecht zegt:

“Where the announcement missed the point for me, though, is in thinking that the hard part of ‘digital textbooks’ is the ‘digital’. It’s true that there are lots of issues and even problems around digitising textbooks, but there are also lots of existing good solutions. All Apple have really done here is add yet another channel that we need to consider and possibly engage with. As educational publishers (and teachers) know, the hard part of digital textbooks is creating the content.”

Apple kan wel goede programma’s maken en de iBook Creator is in elk geval een fijne editor om enhanced ebooks te maken. Het zal auteurs nog sneller in staat stellen boeken te maken. Het nadeel is echter dat deze iBooks alleen op het Apple platform te gebruiken zijn – ze zijn vooralsnog niet elders te publiceren. Apple zegt in de gebruiksvoorwaarden dat je de boeken pas ergens anders mag publiceren als het gratis is:

IMPORTANT NOTE: [This is right at the top of the agreement, on the first page]
If you charge a fee for any book or other work you generate using this software (a “Work”), you may only sell or distribute such Work through Apple (e.g., through the iBookstore) and such distribution will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple. …

B. Distribution of your Work. As a condition of this License and provided you are in compliance with its terms, your Work may be distributed as follows:
(i) if your Work is provided for free (at no charge), you may distribute the Work by any available means;
(ii) if your Work is provided for a fee (including as part of any subscription-based product or service), you may only distribute the Work through Apple and such distribution is subject to the following limitations and conditions: (a) you will be required to enter into a separate written agreement with Apple (or an Apple affiliate or subsidiary) before any commercial distribution of your Work may take place; and (b) Apple may determine for any reason and in its sole discretion not to select your Work for distribution.

Met andere woorden, zolang je er geld voor vraagt, heeft Apple de rechten van de content. Op deze manier gaat Apple natuurlijk de markt niet veroveren – het heeft namelijk het publiceren van studieboeken niet makkelijker gemaakt – het heeft het maken van boeken makkelijker gemaakt, niet het publiceren. En daarmee handelt het in het belang van Apple en niet in het belang van de auteur of de consument.
